The castle was built, by the republic of Siena, starting from the XIII century, on a hill watching the Via Cassia, to defend Siena from the attacks of Florence.
At those times Tuscany was in fact dived in republic, all in struggle each other for the supremacy, Florence and Siena were the powerful.

The village today has only about 42 inhabitants, one hotel, a little numbers of guest houses and a few shops.

The walls, long 570 meters had originally 15 towers, today only 11 are still visible.
