Radicofani Castle - by Collins Camera on FlickrThe castle of Radicofani was named for the first time in year 973 and its history is very complicate, due to its position, is in fact on a rock that control the Via Cassia/Francigena, used by pilgrigms to go to Rome.

Radicofani is the castle of the italian Robin Hood, Ghino di Tacco, a rebel of the republic of Siena from the XIII century. Ghino di Tacco officially was a bandit, a robber, but was mentioned by Dante and Boccaccio as a bandit gentlemen, is said that he gives part of the stolen to the peasants of the area to buy their support. The castle of Radicofani was always contended by the Papal State, Siena and the noble families of this area so its history is hardly traceable.

Today the castle is open, and from here is possible to admire all the Val d'Orcia and the Monte Amiata, under the castle there is a small village with about one thousand inhabitants where is possible to stay in guest houses and taste the cooking of this area between Tuscany and Lazio.
